At Least 20 Burnt Alive as Bus Catches Fire on Hyderabad-Bengaluru Highway; Video
Kurnool (Andhra Pradesh): A tragic accident claimed at least 20 lives early Friday morning when a private Volvo bus caught fire after colliding with a two-wheeler on the Hyderabad-Bengaluru highway in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district.
According to officials, the Kaveri Travels bus, carrying 40 passengers, was en route from Hyderabad to Bengaluru when the accident occurred around 3 am. Police said the two-wheeler got stuck under the bus following the collision, triggering a spark that quickly engulfed the vehicle in flames.
“At around 3 am, a Volvo bus of Kaveri Travels was going from Hyderabad to Bengaluru. It hit a two-wheeler, which got stuck under the bus, likely causing a spark and leading to the fire,” said Kurnool Superintendent of Police Vikrant Patil.
The AC bus was soon consumed by the blaze, trapping many passengers inside. Some managed to escape by breaking open the windows. “Whoever could break the glass are safe,” the SP added.
Rescue teams and firefighters rushed to the scene and managed to douse the flames, but by then the bus had been reduced to ashes. Authorities confirmed that at least 20 people lost their lives in the incident, while others sustained injuries.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep condolences to the victims’ families and directed officials to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured.
An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the fire and to verify the identities of the deceased.
