Authorities Plan Emergency Response Hub on Borghat Section of Pune–Mumbai Expressway
Pune, February 9, 2026: In an effort to strengthen emergency preparedness on one of the most accident-prone sections of the Pune–Mumbai Expressway, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and the Highway Safety Patrol (HSP) are considering setting up a dedicated emergency assistance centre along the Borghat stretch, officials confirmed recently.
According to a report in Hindustan Times, the proposal comes in the wake of a recent incident near the Adoshi tunnel in Khandala, where a tanker transporting highly flammable propylene gas overturned, severely disrupting traffic movement. The accident resulted in the expressway remaining closed for nearly 32 hours as authorities carried out safety operations. Traffic on the Pune–Mumbai route was finally restored around 2 am on Thursday after the gas was safely transferred and the damaged vehicle removed.
Although the expressway reopened, traffic movement continued to be sluggish due to a truck breakdown near Malavli and vehicles stranded close to Kamshet. With increased police presence and traffic management, normal flow was gradually restored later in the morning.
Officials said the incident exposed shortcomings in emergency response infrastructure, particularly in the Borghat ghat section, where steep terrain and limited access often delay rescue and clearance operations.
To address this, the proposed emergency centre would be equipped with heavy-duty cranes, fire-fighting systems, hazardous material handling equipment, ambulances, patrol vehicles, and a central control room. The facility would enable better coordination between the HSP, MSRDC, and disaster management agencies.
