PMRDA says final load testing and safety works are underway, with the long-awaited stretch expected to ease congestion at one of Pune’s busiest junctions.

The persistent traffic bottleneck at Pune University Chowk may soon see major relief, as the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has confirmed that the double-decker flyover project is now in its final stages and the Baner-side wing is expected to open for commuters within the coming week.

University Chowk, located near Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), has long been one of the city’s most congested junctions, affecting daily travel between Shivajinagar, Aundh, Baner and Pashan. Officials said the opening of the new flyover arm is expected to significantly reduce delays, especially during peak hours when commuters often spend close to 45 minutes crossing the junction.

As per updates, nearly 90% of the overall construction work has already been completed, with the remaining ramp works now in the final stretch. The integrated corridor flyover, connecting Aundh to Shivajinagar (E-Square), had opened to traffic in August 2025, while the Baner and Pashan-side ramps were pending completion due to utility shifting and repair work on a leaking water pipeline.

The double-decker structure is being developed as a unique integrated system, with the Metro corridor running on the upper deck and vehicular traffic using the flyover below. The project includes three-lane up-ramps from Aundh, Baner and Pashan that merge into a three-lane integrated bridge, designed to streamline movement through the busy node.

PMRDA has begun final load testing of the flyover, a critical step before opening it for public use. Alongside structural checks, the authority is fast-tracking installation of key safety infrastructure, including directional signage, safety markers and other road guidance systems to ensure a smooth transition once traffic is allowed.

The total length of the double-decker flyover, including ramps, is around 1.76 km, with a viaduct length of over 1.11 km. A notable engineering feature of the project is a 55-metre-long steel girder installed at the main junction for improved traffic management. The project cost is estimated at around Rs 277 crore, with construction executed through Tata Projects Ltd (TPL), the contractor for the Metro concessionaire.

For thousands of commuters travelling daily across this corridor, the opening of the Baner wing is being seen as long overdue, and is expected to bring lasting improvements to traffic flow and connectivity in this crucial part of Pune.
