Bangladesh Imposes Ban on Major Social Media Platforms

Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, and TikTok Restricted from August 2

Bangladesh has imposed a ban on several popular social media platforms, including Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, and YouTube, effective from August 2. This move restricts access to these networks via mobile data connections and follows an earlier suspension of Meta’s platforms due to unrest over quota reforms.

The ban, reported by Global Eyes News through its official X account, has led to concerns about increased VPN usage potentially impacting overall internet speeds in the country.

This decision comes shortly after Turkey announced a similar ban on Instagram. Bangladesh had previously suspended Instagram and Facebook in July in response to widespread unrest over quota reforms, cutting off access via mobile networks. The current ban, however, specifically targets mobile data connections, potentially causing disruptions for millions of users and slowing internet speeds due to the anticipated rise in VPN use.

The series of internet restrictions began in July, with mobile internet disabled on July 17, followed by a broadband shutdown on July 18. While broadband services were partially restored on July 23, mobile networks remained offline until July 28.
