It’s crucial for parents and caregivers to be aware of the signs and take appropriate action to to protect children from the heat.

Dr. Pradeep Suryawanshi, Pediatrician and Neonatologist, Sahyadri Super speciality Hospital Nagar Road said, “With temperatures reaching 40-41°C in Pune, it is important for parents to take precautions to prevent heatstroke in children. To ensure their safety, it is recommended that children drink plenty of fluids such as lemon water, juices, and soups every 2-3 hours, consume at least 2-3 liters of fluid per day, and avoid playing outside between 11 am and 6 pm. Inside the home, children should avoid drinking cold beverages and instead opt for warm water. Clothing should allow for free movement, windows should be kept open for air circulation, and direct sunlight and sudden temperature changes must be avoided. Parents should also monitor their children’s urine color as an indicator of their hydration levels. It is crucial to prioritize fluid intake in order to prevent heat-related health issues.

Here are some additional measures that can be taken to prevent heat-related illnesses:

  1. Stay hydrated: Encourage children to drink plenty of fluids, such as water or electrolyte solutions, throughout the day, even if they don’t feel thirsty. Avoid sugary or caffeinated drinks, as they can contribute to dehydration.
  2. Dress appropriately: Dress children in lightweight, loose-fitting clothing made of breathable fabrics. Choose light colors that reflect sunlight rather than absorb it.
  3. Seek shade: When outdoors, find shaded areas or create shade using umbrellas, canopies, or sunshades. Limit exposure to direct sunlight, especially during the hottest parts of the day.
  4. Limit outdoor activities: Try to schedule outdoor activities in the early morning or evening when temperatures are cooler. Minimize strenuous activities and provide frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
  5. Use sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF to protect children’s skin from harmful UV rays. Reapply regularly, following the instructions on the product.
  6. Cool down: Help children cool down by using fans, air conditioners, or cool damp cloths. Encourage them to take cool showers or baths to lower their body temperature.
  7. Never leave children in parked vehicles : It’s essential to never leave a child unattended in a parked car, even for a short period. Temperatures inside a vehicle can rise rapidly and become life-threatening.
  8. Educate children : Teach children about the importance of staying cool and hydrated during hot weather. Encourage them to seek shade, drink water, and communicate any discomfort or symptoms they may experience.

Remember, if you suspect a child is experiencing heat stroke or any heat-related illness, seek immediate medical attention. Prompt treatment is vital to prevent further complications.
