Bengaluru vs. Delhi: Reddit Debate Heats Up Over Delhiites' Reputation for Rudeness
A Reddit post has ignited a heated discussion about how people from Delhi are perceived, with many debating whether residents of the national capital are genuinely as “rude and uncultured” as they are often described, especially by those living in Bengaluru.
Why do people perceive Delhiites as being aggressive?
A user named ‘Biryanikaghulam’ initiated a conversation with the question, “Why do Delhiites appear to be aggressive?” They aimed to delve into the historical reasons behind this perception.
The user highlighted Delhi’s tumultuous history, suggesting that the city’s frequent destruction and reconstruction might have shaped the attitude of its inhabitants. They mentioned, “This doesn’t excuse aggressive or rude behavior, but I think it might help explain it. Delhi has been destroyed and rebuilt seven times, with various names throughout history—Indraprastha, Mehrauli, Qila Rai Pithora, Siri, Tughlaqabad, Jahanpanah, Ferozabad, Dinpanah, Shahjahanabad (Old Delhi), Dhillika, Dilli, and finally Delhi.”
Additionally, the user recounted their personal experience in Bengaluru, where they sensed a significant animosity towards people from Delhi. “During my recent visit to Bangalore, I noticed that the dislike for Delhiites is quite palpable.”
“We have a reputation for being rude and uncultured. I’m not trying to justify this behavior; I’m simply interested in hearing your thoughts on this topic,” the post mentioned.

Different perspectives from other users
The post generated a lot of responses, with people recounting their own experiences. One person pointed out the irony that cities famous for their hospitality, like Bengaluru and Pune, can sometimes have rude individuals, while their own experience in Delhi was quite different.
“My parents were really worried about me going to Delhi, but apart from the occasional rude person, I haven’t encountered anyone discriminatory there. They may be very direct and brutally honest, but they’re not particularly aggressive,” they mentioned.
Another commenter emphasized the diverse and cosmopolitan character of Delhi, suggesting it makes its residents more accepting of newcomers.
“Delhi has become so accustomed to outsiders moving in that it’s just part of life here. There aren’t many true natives left. In places with a larger native population, that’s where outsiders often face discrimination and tension. It’s similar in Bengal, where various cultures mix, so Bengalis are generally relaxed about outsiders,” they explained.
Several others noted that while Delhiites might come across as aggressive, their intentions are usually good. “People from Delhi might have an aggressive tone, but they are generally kind.”
“That’s exactly what I keep telling everyone,” one user remarked.
Many others shared the sentiment that Delhi’s image of aggression is exaggerated.
“I’ve lived in Delhi for so many years, and I believe we just have a bad reputation. I’ve never experienced a serious fight or anything. People here are generally fine. Road rage happens everywhere,” one person commented.
So, are Delhiites truly that rude?
The debate goes on, but it’s evident that people’s experiences vary depending on their location and the individuals they interact with. While Delhiites may be more straightforward in their communication, many think they are frequently misinterpreted. Whether this is just a matter of perception or reality, the conversation around Delhi’s reputation is unlikely to fade anytime soon.
