Pune: The Air Quality Index (AQI) of Pune is hovering between moderate and poor for the last few days and the experts appeal to citizens to use face masks, especially while passing through the hotspot where the air quality is very poor. Currently, the air quality of Pune is unhealthy, that is PM 2.5 pollutant in Pune’s air is high.
PM 2.5 is a fine particulate matter that is an air pollutant that is a cause of concern for the health of people when its levels are high in the air. These are tiny particles in the air which reduce visibility and cause the air to appear hazy when its levels are high.
According to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR) founder and project director Gufran Beig, the major factors that are affecting air quality include PM 2.5, wind and industrial pollution. And due to the cool temperature, the winds are stagnant and therefore the wind speed is low. So the air pollutants remain in the air causing the air quality to become bad and polluted.”
Further explaining about quality of air, he said, “The air quality of Pune is hovering between moderate to poor, while the condition was poor a few days back but is moderate today. This year, the condition of air quality has deteriorated compared to last year.”
The necessary precautions that need to be taken to stay affected by the poor quality of air, Beig said, “Due to poor quality of air people should use a mask to avoid the pollutants from entering our system. And avoid going to places where the construction work or places which are major hotspots of air pollution in Pune. Inhaling these air pollutants can cause cough cold or diseases related to bronchi or allergies.”
