Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announces a high-speed greenfield link that will redefine connectivity between Mumbai, Pune and southern Maharashtra.

A major infrastructure announcement has brought significant excitement for commuters travelling between Mumbai and Pune. The journey, which typically takes between two-and-a-half to three hours and often stretches to five hours due to traffic is expected to shrink dramatically to just 90 minutes. The development follows Union Minister Nitin Gadkari’s statement at the Vidhan Bhavan, where he unveiled a transformative expressway plan designed to overhaul regional connectivity.

Gadkari revealed that projects worth Rs 1.5 lakh crore have been approved for Maharashtra for the coming year. Out of this, Rs 50,000 crore has been allocated to the Public Works Department, paving the way for large-scale upgrades across the state’s transport network. Central to this vision is a new 130-km greenfield expressway, designed to connect seamlessly with the existing Mumbai–Pune Expressway and significantly enhance travel efficiency.

According to the announcement, the high-speed corridor will run from Atal Setu to JNPT Chowk and further to the Pune–Shivapur Junction, creating a continuous, streamlined link between the two major cities and onward to southern regions. The shared express highway is expected to reduce congestion on the current expressway, provide faster freight movement, and improve economic integration between Mumbai, Pune and industrial hubs along the route.

The project has been described as a game-changer for daily travellers, logistics operators and long-distance commuters. With the new corridor, a traveller could have morning tea in Mumbai and reach Pune in time for breakfast, a symbolic demonstration of just how much faster intercity movement will become.

Officials expect the expressway to boost economic productivity, reduce vehicular pressure on existing routes, and open new avenues for development across the connected regions. With planning and approvals underway, the project marks one of the most ambitious expansions of Maharashtra’s road infrastructure in recent years.

A superfast Mumbai–Pune link that once seemed improbable is now set to become a reality, reshaping mobility for lakhs of citizens and businesses that rely on the corridor every day.
