In a historic moment, Maharashtra’s first transgender Dhol-Tasha troupe, Shikhandi, is set to perform at this year’s Ganeshotsav, shattering societal norms and stereotypes. Founded by Manasvi Goelkar, Shikhandi Dhol-Tasha Pathak aims to showcase the talents of the transgender community.

“Transgender society has a lot of skills and artists, but my society is still backward due to lack of proper opportunities,” Goelkar shared with Pune Pulse. “So, as a fight for our existence, we started Shikhandi Dhol Tasha Team.” Goelkar’s journey began with rejection, but this rejection sparked inspiration.

Goelkar approached several troupes to participate but faced rejection. However, this setback fueled determination. With the support of guru Kadambari Sheikh, Shikhandi was born.

The journey wasn’t easy. Securing instruments, practice space, and training were significant challenges. “My guru decided to start an independent team of transgenders. We started working, but no one had experience in playing instruments,” Goelkar recalled.

Atul Behre from Nadbrahma Dhol-Tasha team provided crucial training, while Pritesh Kamble and Praveen Sonavane offered invaluable support. Today, Shikhandi boasts 30 members from diverse backgrounds.

Shikhandi’s message is clear: transgender individuals can stand competently alongside others. “This year, we’re performing in front of Dagdusheth Ganapati and five revered Ganapatis. We want to send a message that transgenders can also stand with us competently,” Goelkar emphasized.

Shikhandi’s story serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that determination and willpower can overcome adversity. As they take the stage, they will not only entertain but also challenge societal norms, paving the way for greater inclusivity and acceptance.
