BSE, NSE Holiday: Is the Stock Market Open or Closed for Trading Today?
Indian stock exchanges are closed today as voting takes place for municipal elections across Maharashtra. Trading has been suspended on both the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange on January 15. There will be no activity in equities, equity derivatives, commodity derivatives or electronic gold receipts.
The closure follows the state government’s notification declaring January 15 a public holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881 to facilitate polling across 29 municipal corporations, including Mumbai City and Mumbai Suburban under the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. With banks largely shut on such days, clearing and settlement functions are also disrupted, making trading suspension routine during major civic events.
The shutdown comes at a time when Dalal Street has endured one of its weakest starts to a year in almost ten years, pressured by global volatility, concerns over US-India trade relations and foreign investor outflows.
Separately, the BSE has announced changes in derivatives expiry. Contracts that were set to expire on January 15 will now expire on January 14. The NSE has also revised its earlier guidance and confirmed that January 15 will be a full holiday for both the capital market and futures and options segments. Earlier communications had classified it as only a settlement holiday.
MCX Partially Operational
Commodity trading on the Multi Commodity Exchange is only available in the evening window. The morning session from 9 AM to 5 PM has been suspended due to polling. Bullion contracts such as gold and silver will trade from 5 PM to 11:55 PM. Selected agricultural commodities will trade until 9 PM. The evening session is aligned with global commodity markets and will remain functional.
When Will Markets Reopen
Vote counting for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and 28 other civic bodies is scheduled for January 16. Markets are expected to reopen tomorrow once clearing and settlement operations resume.
Market Holidays in 2026
With today’s closure included, Indian stock markets will remain shut for a total of 16 days in 2026. The next holiday is on January 26 for Republic Day.
Notable holidays in the first half of the year are Holi on March 3, Ram Navami on March 26, Mahavir Jayanti on March 31, Good Friday on April 3, Ambedkar Jayanti on April 14, Maharashtra Day on May 1 and Bakri Id on May 28.
In the latter half, markets will remain closed on Muharram on June 26, Ganesh Chaturthi on September 14, Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, Dussehra on October 20, Diwali Balipratipada on November 10, Guru Nanak Jayanti on November 24 and Christmas on December 25. Independence Day falls on a weekend this year, so no additional closure has been scheduled.
Budget Day Watch
Markets may operate on Sunday, February 1 if the central government chooses to present the Union Budget on that day. An official confirmation is awaited.
