Kerala Woman Fined ₹7,000 and Loses License for Blocking Ambulance Carrying Critical Patient
In a disturbing incident that sparked public outrage, a woman in Kochi has been fined ₹7,000 and had her driving license suspended for six months after she was caught deliberately obstructing an ambulance en route to a hospital with a critically injured patient.
The woman, riding a Honda Navi, reportedly refused to make way for the emergency vehicle despite repeated honks and the flashing beacon. The incident occurred over a stretch of 500–600 metres between Kaloor Metro Station and Kaloor Junction, an area known for dense traffic. A bystander recorded the episode on video, which quickly went viral and caught the attention of the authorities.
According to officials, the ambulance was transporting a patient from a hospital in Alwaye to a specialist facility for emergency surgery. The man had suffered a severe industrial injury, losing his palm in a factory accident. Doctors needed to perform a time-sensitive procedure to reattach it.
Despite the urgency, the woman continued to ride ahead of the ambulance, ignoring multiple attempts by the driver to overtake her. The video evidence clearly shows that there was ample space on both sides of the road for her to move aside, indicating that the obstruction was intentional.
Reacting swiftly, the Kerala Motor Vehicle Department reviewed the footage, identified the rider using her vehicle’s registration number, and summoned her. In addition to the fine and license suspension, authorities are also considering assigning her community service as a corrective measure.
Officials stated that the driver of the ambulance was placed in a difficult position. Any attempt to overtake aggressively could have led to an accident and the driver may have been wrongly blamed or even attacked by the public.
This incident once again underscores the need for civic awareness and sensitivity during emergencies. The Kerala MVD has been widely praised for its quick action, reinforcing its reputation as one of India’s most responsive and effective traffic enforcement bodies.
