Chennai Techie Dies by Electrocution Amid Work Pressure, Police Investigate
Chennai – A 38-year-old software engineer from Chennai, Karthikeyan, tragically electrocuted himself to death at his home in Thazhambur, reportedly due to work-related stress. The incident occurred on Thursday night while he was alone at his residence near Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR).
Karthikeyan, who had been working at a software firm in Pallavaram for 15 years, had reportedly been suffering from depression linked to his work pressure, according to police reports. He had been receiving treatment for the past two months at a hospital in Medavakkam.
On the day of the incident, Karthikeyan’s wife, Jayarani, had left for Thirunallar Temple with friends, leaving him alone at home. Upon her return on Thursday night, she found the house locked from the inside and was unable to get a response from her husband. Using an alternate key, she entered the house and found Karthikeyan unconscious, wrapped in a power cable connected to the main electrical junction in the hall.
Karthikeyan lived with his wife and their two children, aged 10 and 8. Authorities have registered a case of unnatural death and are conducting further investigations. His body has been sent for post-mortem at Chromepet Government Hospital.
This incident follows recent public concern over work-related stress, particularly after the death of 26-year-old chartered accountant Anna Sebastian Perayil, who worked at Ernst & Young. Her mother has alleged that toxic work culture contributed to her daughter’s deteriorating health and eventual death. The Union Labour Ministry has since launched an investigation into that case.
Karthikeyan’s death has raised additional alarm over the impact of workplace stress on employees’ mental and physical well-being across India.
