Pune: Due to a sharp drop in production, the prices of egg and chicken have gone up in Pune as well as in other consuming regions. This price increase comes at a point when consumption goes down drastically due to the holiday season when the majority of people avoid non vegetarian food.

Egg prices and chicken prices are expected to increase further after Dussehra.

As per further information, eggs in Pune are currently priced at Rs 5.72 per egg, compared to Rs 4.84 per egg last year. Wholesale price of eggs across the country is close to Rs 6 per egg, whereas last year it was around Rs 5 per egg. Chicken prices in retail markets are priced between Rs 240 and 260 per kg. Last year, chicken prices in retail markets were priced around Rs 200 to 210 per kg.

Poultry Giant Venkateshwara Hatcheries General Manager Dr Prasanna Pedgaonkar stated that a significant drop in production is the cause of the price increase. Most manufacturers opted to reduce production because they were being too cautious. This most often applied to facilities that produced layer eggs. There were bird culls. However, current demand cannot be satisfied with current production levels. Reduced output is the cause of the price increase.

In India, 20 billion eggs and 1.3 billion live birds are sold on a daily basis.
