Members of the NIBM – Undri Road Residents Forum had complained to their local Corporator Nanda Lonkar about the harassment caused due to the transgenders who often stood on the road and passed lewd comments on the passerby. This particular problem increased after the Covid19 restrictions were lifted. The residents suggested that more illumination on the road shall be a deterrent to them and they would stop coming on this road.

Today, on January 9, 2021 the work for installing street lights was completed and inaugurated at the hands of Member of Rajya Sabha Vandana Chavan, local Corporator Nanda Lonkar and many other dignitaries.

“I have always seen a huge change whenever I visit Nanda Lonkar’s ward. There is always something new that she has done in her ward for her citizens. This is indeed a great step in curbing menace.” said Vanadana Chavan.

Commenting on the question raised on protecting hills around NIBM, Hadapsar and Kondhwa she said,

I believe this universe is given to us on lease to us and we must ensure that it is protected. Citizens have a great power and they should come together and help each other in saving our city and our hills which are acting as our lungs. There has been a state government policy where all the hills are supposed to be protected for the future generations.

Nanda Lonkar, local Corporator Prabhag 26 in the program said, “I take this opportunity to thank residents of my area who have time and again helped me in all my endeavours. But it is my responsibility to ensure that they live in a safe and secured environment. Hence when they approached me with the problem of lack of illumination on Nibm Undri road which made their life troublesome due to the transgenders who often created problems to the residents. They had requested me to install street lights which can help in illuminating the area. As promised to them I have now installed more than 12 lights on this stretch of road from Bakers Point to Clover Highlands.”

Chavan further said that citizens have great power and they can move mountains. You should all come together and raise voice against any injustice whether it’s on human or nature.

Members of the Golden Heart Foundation were also present who presented each participant of the program with a cloth bag. Shehnaz Chawla of the foundation stated that each one of us should use only cotton bags and completely stop using bags which are not degradable.

The programme was organised by the support of Nibm Undri road residents forum members Parveen Tambe, president, Shehnaz Chawla, vice president of the forum and many others and attended by many local citizens, political leaders and members of Anandvan Mitra Mandal.
