CNG Cars Surge in Popularity: Maruti Ertiga Tops FY2025 Sales, Dzire CNG Sees Strong Demand
As fuel prices continue to pinch household budgets, Indian car buyers are switching to CNG cars in record numbers. New industry figures show that CNG models accounted for 19.5% of India’s passenger car market in FY2025 more than triple the share they held just five years ago.
Maruti Suzuki dominates CNG segment
Maruti Suzuki remains the undisputed leader in the CNG space. Its flagship MPV, the Maruti Ertiga CNG, took the crown as the country’s best-selling CNG car last financial year, with an impressive 1,29,920 units sold. Priced from ₹11.00 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), the Ertiga CNG combines spaciousness with a respectable claimed mileage of 26.11 km/kg.
Following closely, the Maruti Wagon R CNG logged 1,02,128 units. Known for its tall-boy design and city-friendly size, the Wagon R CNG also boasts segment-leading efficiency of 33.47 km/kg, helping it stay popular despite growing competition.
At number three, the Maruti Dzire CNG—a compact sedan loved by families and cab operators alike—registered sales of 89,015 units. Retailing from around ₹8.79 lakh, the Dzire CNG edges out the Wagon R in fuel economy too, delivering a claimed 33.73 km/kg.

Tata and Hyundai make their mark
Tata Motors continued its CNG push, with the Tata Punch CNG clocking over 71,000 units, making it the top-selling CNG SUV. The Nexon CNG, notable for being India’s first turbocharged CNG model, found 34,712 buyers. Hyundai, too, maintained a solid presence with its compact sedan, the Aura CNG, selling nearly 50,000 units.
Rising demand reshapes strategy
With over one in three Maruti Suzuki cars now running on CNG, manufacturers are clearly responding to buyers’ need for lower running costs and cleaner fuel options. Analysts suggest this trend will accelerate as new models like the Tata Curvv CNG and Maruti Grand Vitara CNG are expected to join the lineup soon.
In parallel, automakers are sweetening deals to keep the momentum going. This month, Maruti Suzuki is offering attractive discounts across its Arena range, including up to ₹1.10 lakh on Swift AMT variants and over ₹1 lakh on Wagon R and Celerio models.
As the auto market adapts to rising fuel prices and stricter emissions norms, it’s clear that CNG is no longer just a taxi segment choice—it has moved firmly into the mainstream.
