The much-anticipated Pune Ring Road project has officially entered the construction phase, with the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) kickstarting work after finalizing the tendering process. Nine contracting firms have been awarded the project, and authorities have set an ambitious target to complete the entire infrastructure within two and a half years.

Designed to significantly reduce traffic congestion across Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, the project covers a massive 172 kilometers and is planned to be 110 meters wide. With an estimated budget of ₹42,711 crore, the ring road is one of Maharashtra’s most extensive infrastructure undertakings. It is divided into two major parts — eastern and western sections — to streamline execution.

Land acquisition is nearly complete, according to MSRDC officials, with 99% of the land secured for the western stretch and 98% for the eastern. The state cabinet approved the revised project proposal just ahead of the enforcement of the election code of conduct, ensuring timely progress.

The eastern portion of the project is split into seven phases, while the western is divided into five. Construction activities have already begun in several key areas such as Wadebolhai, Khadakwasla, Sinhagad, Mulshi, Urse, Chakan, Hinjawadi, and Soratwadi.

“Following directives from the state government, we’ve handed out work orders to nine firms. The goal is to wrap up construction within the next two and a half years,” said a MSRDC official. He explained that initial activities are focused on grading hilly terrain, along with constructing bridges and embankments in preparation for the upcoming monsoon season. Other segments of the project will advance simultaneously.

He also emphasized that contractors will be held accountable for delays. “If any company fails to meet the timeline, they’ll face financial penalties and be liable to compensate under government regulations,” he added.

Land Acquisition Details

For the eastern ring road segment, 1,054.03 hectares have been acquired, encompassing a mix of private, government-owned, and forest lands. Meanwhile, 692.66 hectares have been secured for the western section. Only about six hectares remain, and MSRDC officials confirmed that the acquisition process for this remaining land is currently underway.
