A Surat couple took their vows in an unlikely setting – a police station – after a family feud broke out over a food shortage at their wedding venue.

On Sunday, a wedding ceremony at Shri Lakshmi Narayan Hall in Surat’s Varachha area took an unexpected turn when a heated argument erupted between the families of bride Anjali Kumari and groom Rahul Pramod Mahanto over a shortage of food, forcing the couple to abandon their original plans and tie the knot at a nearby police station instead.

A wedding celebration in Surat, Gujarat, took a dramatic turn when a food shortage sparked a heated dispute, prompting the ceremony to be abruptly cancelled. However, in a surprising twist, the local police intervened, ensuring that the couple’s special day wasn’t completely ruined, and facilitating an impromptu wedding ceremony at the police station instead.

Bride Anjali Kumari and groom Rahul Pramod Mahanto, both originally from Bihar, were poised to tie the knot at Shri Lakshmi Narayan Hall in Surat’s Varachha area, but their wedding plans were suddenly derailed when a bitter dispute erupted between their families over food.

The disagreement quickly spiralled out of control, with the groom’s family flatly refusing to proceed with the ceremony, leaving the bride’s family stunned and distraught. In a desperate bid to salvage the situation, Anjali’s family sought the intervention of the local police.

Acting swiftly, officers at Varachha police station dispatched a team to persuade the groom to reconsider, but his family remained resolute in their refusal. Undeterred, the police devised an unorthodox plan to ensure the wedding went ahead. They escorted the groom to the police station, where a simple yet intimate ceremony was hastily arranged. With police officers serving as witnesses, the couple exchanged garlands, formally sealing their union in a truly unconventional wedding celebration.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar verified the unusual wedding saga, explaining that the police intervention was motivated by a desire to salvage the couple’s special day. ‘The majority of the wedding rituals had already been completed, with only the exchange of garlands remaining. However, a disagreement over an alleged food shortage led to a heated argument between the two families, prompting the groom’s side to call off the ceremony,’ Kumar elaborated.

Kumar emphasized that the police intervention was driven by a concern for the bride’s well-being and future. ‘We took a proactive approach, prioritizing the woman’s interests and facilitating the couple’s union,” he explained.

While a police station may not have been the fairytale setting they had envisioned, Anjali Kumari and Rahul Pramod Mahanto ultimately emerged from the unexpected turn of events as newlyweds, making the most of an unconventional yet memorable wedding day.
