Cyclone Alert? IMD Issues Red and Orange Alerts for Goa, Maharashtra Amid Developing Low-Pressure System
May 23, 2025 | Weather News
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a red and orange alert across multiple regions of Maharashtra and Goa as a low-pressure system brews over the east-central Arabian Sea near the South Konkan and Goa coast. While a cyclone has not yet formed, the system may intensify into a depression and potentially evolve into a cyclonic storm in the coming days, depending on atmospheric and oceanic developments.
Red Alert in Goa: Extremely Heavy Rainfall Expected
Goa has been placed under a red alert until Sunday, May 25, with the IMD warning of extremely heavy rainfall. On Thursday, Panjim in North Goa recorded 9 cm of rain. The Goa government has activated 24×7 control rooms in both North and South Goa to monitor the evolving weather scenario. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant assured that the State Disaster Management Authority is on high alert and prepared to provide immediate assistance.
Heavy Rainfall Forecast for Maharashtra Coast
The weather department has also issued an orange alert for Mumbai on May 23 and 24, cautioning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 km/h at isolated locations. A red alert has been declared for Raigad and Ratnagiri districts for Friday, with warnings of extremely heavy rainfall.
Neighbouring regions such as Thane, Palghar, and Sindhudurg, along with the Western Ghats in Pune and Satara districts, have also been issued orange alerts. Mumbai experienced light showers and overcast skies on Friday, with further intensification expected.
Rain Damage Reported in Thane District
In Thane, heavy rain led to severe traffic congestion on the Bhiwandi-Wada road. The downpour damaged road surfaces, causing large potholes and disrupting traffic. The situation was worsened by ongoing road construction in the area.
Delhi Weather Update: Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds
In the national capital, Delhi, the IMD has forecast partly cloudy skies for Friday along with light to very light rain, thunderstorms, and lightning. Gusty winds with speeds of 40–50 km/h are expected by late evening, potentially touching 60 km/h in select areas, accompanied by dusty winds during thunderstorms.
West Coast Braces for More Rain
The IMD has predicted continuing rainfall activity across the Konkan coast, Goa, coastal Karnataka, and Kerala over the next few days as the low-pressure system intensifies. Residents are advised to remain alert and follow official updates closely.
