Pune turned into a spectacle of devotion and grandeur today as the city welcomed its most beloved deity, the Shrimant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati. Marking the 133rd Ganeshotsav, the celebrations dazzled devotees with a majestic theme. The Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Trust brought alive Kerala’s famed Padmanabhaswamy Temple, one of the country’s most revered shrines of Lord Vishnu, recreating its divine aura right in the heart of Pune.

Theme Of 2025

The pandal this year is a life-sized replica of the Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram. The structure stands nearly 120 feet long, 90 feet wide, and 100 feet tall. It includes a five-tiered gopuram, an octagonal sanctum, and 30 carved pillars. Inside the pandal, devotees can see depictions from the Ramayana and Krishna Leela, along with idols of Vishnu-Lakshmi, Shiva-Parvati, Krishna, and Narasimha.

According to the trust, over 500 sculpted figures will be part of the design. The centerpiece will be Lord Padmanabha in the Anantashayana pose, also known as eternal yogic sleep.

Artisans At Work

More than 400 artisans from Maharashtra are working on the construction at Hirabagh Kothi. The framework is made of bamboo and wood, with carvings and decorations designed to resemble the temple in Kerala.

Mahesh Suryavanshi, treasurer of the trust, said the structure is not only decoration but also a showcase of skilled craftsmanship. He added that each detail is being created with devotion and patience.

Expected Crowd and Rituals

The celebrations are expected to draw over two crore devotees from across India. The trust has planned several rituals, including Maha Abhishek, Satya Vinayak Puja, Ganga Aarti, and Varkari Jagran. One of the highlights will be the mass recitation of the Atharvashirsha by thousands of devotees, including schoolchildren.

To make darshan easier, arrangements are being made for senior citizens and differently-abled devotees. Walkways and eco-friendly practices like reusable decorations and reduced plastic use have also been planned.

Aarti Timings

The temple has announced the timings for daily aartis during the festival:

  • Morning Suprabhatam Aarti: 7:30 AM to 7:45 AM
  • Naivedyam Aarti: 1:30 PM to 1:45 PM
  • Madhyana Aarti: 3:00 PM to 3:15 PM
  • Maha Aarti (Evening): 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM
  • Shejarti (Night): 10:30 PM to 10:45 PM

Journey Of The Idol

The idol of Lord Ganesha at the Dagdusheth temple has its own history. In 1896, after Dagdusheth passed away, his nephew Govindsheth took responsibility for the temple and introduced a new idol. Later in 1968, a fresh idol was created by sculptor Nagesh Appa Shilpi. This idol is 5.5 feet tall and decorated with 125 kilograms of gold. It continues to be the main idol of the temple today.

The idol is adorned with different crowns studded with precious stones throughout the ten-day festival. Unlike other idols, it is never immersed in water during visarjan. Instead, a smaller replica is used for the immersion ritual, keeping the original idol intact.

Legacy Of Dagdusheth Ganpati

The Shrimant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Temple is considered one of the five ‘Manache Ganpatis’, the most respected Ganesha idols in Pune. The temple began with the personal grief of Dagdusheth, who had lost his child, but it went on to become a place of devotion for millions. Over time, the temple has grown into an important spiritual and cultural center, symbolizing both tradition and community spirit.
