Denied Leave, Indian Groom Marries Bride via Video Call in Unique Virtual Ceremony
A couple had to hold their wedding ceremony over a video call after the groom’s boss in Turkey refused to grant him leave. The groom, Adnan Muhammad, who is from Bilaspur, and the bride from Himachal Pradesh exchanged vows by saying “Qubool Hai” through the call. Adnan had planned to come to India for the wedding, but his leave request was denied, which complicated things. The situation became urgent due to the bride’s grandfather being unwell and wanting to see his granddaughter get married. This led the couple and their families to find a different way to celebrate, and they decided to conduct the wedding via video call. The groom’s family traveled from Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh to Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, and the marriage rituals were carried out over the call with the guidance of a qazi, as reported by PTI.
This isn’t the first time a couple has tied the knot over a video call. In July 2023, another couple in Himachal Pradesh got married online due to flash floods, heavy rainfall, and landslides that halted life in the mountainous area. Ashish Singha and Shivani Thakur had intended for the groom to bring the baraat from Kotgarh, a village in Shimla, to Bhuntar, the bride’s hometown in Kullu. However, the severe weather forced the families to opt for a virtual wedding instead.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, when everything came to a halt, many couples also chose to marry via video calls. For instance, in Kerala, Vignesh KM and Anjali Ranjith exchanged vows over Zoom. They even created an e-invitation that included a Zoom ID and password for guests to join the online celebration.
The ceremony was held at the groom’s home, with Vignesh’s roommates helping with the wedding rituals, while his parents sent the mangalsutra and wedding attire through speed post.
