Ravi Sharma says renting in Sydney while investing elsewhere helps him grow wealth faster through a strategy known as ‘rentvesting’.

An Indian-origin property investor in Australia has drawn attention online for an unusual financial choice, owning a massive real estate portfolio but still living in a rented home.

Ravi Sharma (32), who owns around 23 properties worth nearly $25 million (over ₹150–200 crore), lives with his wife in a rented three-bedroom penthouse in Sydney’s Macquarie Park. Despite the high lifestyle, he reportedly pays about $1,420 per week in rent.

Sharma describes the decision not as irony, but as a deliberate investment strategy. He follows a growing trend called rentvesting — renting in an expensive city where one wants to live, while buying investment properties in more affordable areas that offer better returns.

According to Sharma, purchasing a home in Sydney would require a very large deposit, tying up capital in a single high-cost asset. Instead, he prefers keeping money free to expand his portfolio across regions.

His property journey began early. At just 21, he bought his first investment,  a three-bedroom house in Dubbo for $190,000. Over the next decade, he steadily added properties across Australia, renting them out and reinvesting the income.

Sharma is also the founder of Search Property Buyer’s Agency, and his firm has been shortlisted for major industry awards. He shares financial and property advice through his YouTube channel, Personal Finance with Ravi Sharma, which has a large subscriber base.

The story has sparked discussion about modern wealth-building approaches, especially among young investors who are choosing flexibility over traditional home ownership in expensive global cities.
