Devendra Fadnavis Announces ₹80,000-Crore Development Push for Pune
Pune is set to witness a major transformation as Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis unveiled an ambitious roadmap of development projects worth nearly ₹80,000 crore aimed at the city’s all-round growth in the coming years. The announcement reflects a large-scale vision to strengthen Pune’s infrastructure, mobility, environment, and public services.
Addressing a large public gathering at Katraj Chowk, the Chief Minister highlighted Pune’s importance as one of India’s leading cultural, industrial, and educational hubs, describing it as the economic backbone of Maharashtra. The event was attended by Union Minister of State Murlidhar Mohol, senior ministers Chandrakant Patil and Pankaja Munde, Minister of State Madhuri Misal, along with several MLAs, BJP leaders, and party workers.
Fadnavis stated that during the last five years of BJP governance in the Pune Municipal Corporation, focused efforts were made toward comprehensive urban development. He dismissed opposition criticism, urging them to assess ground realities rather than indulge in baseless allegations. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said, both the central and state governments have jointly prepared a robust and future-ready development blueprint for Pune.
A key highlight of the plan is the expansion of the Pune Metro. A total metro network of 110 kilometers has been proposed, with 31 percent of the work already completed. Additionally, 24 kilometers of metro routes are currently in the final stages of construction. The city’s long-awaited 24/7 water supply project has achieved 75 percent completion. Alongside this, modern sewage treatment facilities and an extensive 88-kilometer river rejuvenation project are expected to significantly improve flood management and environmental sustainability.
The Chief Minister also revealed that a separate development plan worth ₹44,000 crore has been drawn up exclusively for Pune. To tackle traffic congestion, the government plans to construct new flyovers, develop a ring road, and build 54 kilometers of underground transport corridors. An Intelligent Traffic Management System will also be introduced to ensure smoother vehicular movement across the city.
Emphasizing technology-driven governance, Fadnavis said the state is committed to deploying AI-enabled CCTV surveillance, upgrading schools into smart education hubs, and ensuring affordable and accessible healthcare for citizens.
Union Minister of State Murlidhar Mohol, speaking at the event, credited the BJP’s five-year tenure in the Pune Municipal Corporation for bringing visible and structural changes to the city. He noted that Pune residents have consistently supported the BJP in various elections. With the city expected to expand further, Mohol questioned why such long-term planning was not prioritized earlier when Ajit Pawar was handling responsibilities as Guardian Minister. He asserted that Pune’s voters would not allow the opposition another chance, expressing confidence that the city would once again elect a BJP mayor. He appealed to citizens to continue supporting BJP candidates, stating that with the Prime Minister at the Centre and the Chief Minister in the state from the same party, Pune’s development would remain firmly on track under BJP leadership.
Senior Minister Chandrakant Patil also addressed the gathering, pointing out that governments led by Ajit Pawar had been in power in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal bodies for several years. He said that after securing a clear mandate in the previous elections, the BJP governed both cities for five consecutive years, during which numerous development initiatives were launched. Responding to recent criticism from Ajit Pawar, Patil remarked that citizens are now questioning why significant development did not take place during Pawar’s long tenure as Pune district’s Guardian Minister.
