Launched on Independence Day, this engineering marvel takes over 11 hours to travel from Chhattisgarh to Nagpur
The Indian Railways has added another feather to its cap with the Super Vasuki, the world’s longest and heaviest train, currently operating between Chhattisgarh and Nagpur in Maharashtra. This freight train, launched on August 15, 2022, as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations, has become a symbol of India’s engineering prowess and logistical strength.
Measuring an astonishing 3.5 kilometres in length and comprising 295 wagons and 6 engines, the Super Vasuki can carry up to 27,000 tonnes of coal and freight. It’s designed to serve heavy industries and thermal power plants, providing a cost-effective and efficient solution for bulk transport. For context, it would take nearly an hour to walk from the first to the last coach of this mega train.
The journey of the Super Vasuki takes approximately 11 hours and 20 minutes, covering the stretch between the Korba region of Chhattisgarh and the Itarsi-Nagpur route in Maharashtra. The train operates primarily on freight corridors and does not carry passengers.
This record-breaking train is a part of Indian Railways’ broader efforts to enhance freight efficiency across the country. With more than 13,000 trains running daily and over 4 crore passengers travelling every day, Indian Railways is a vital backbone of the nation’s transport system. However, in recent years, freight movement has become equally important—powering industries, infrastructure, and the economy.
From steam locomotives to high-speed Vande Bharat trains, India’s railway story continues to evolve. The Super Vasuki stands out not for speed or passenger amenities, but for sheer scale and industrial capacity. It represents a shift in focus from passenger transport to strengthening the freight sector, ensuring faster movement of essential goods and boosting economic productivity.
Indian Railways’ achievement with Super Vasuki not only highlights the capabilities of indigenous logistics but also sets a global benchmark. It’s a reminder that while high-speed trains capture headlines, it’s freight giants like Super Vasuki that quietly drive the nation forward.
