Direct Metro Access From Highways To Pune City! Check Proposed Routes And Stations
Pune, May 27: Pune’s expanding Metro network is set to improve connectivity between the city, highways, and suburban regions, promising faster and more convenient travel for daily commuters in the coming years.
Over the past few months, Metro construction in Pune has picked up pace. While most work under Phase 1 is nearing completion, expansion work on key new corridors is progressing rapidly.
Two major extensions currently under development are the Swargate–Katraj underground corridor and the Vanaz–Chandani Chowk elevated extension.
The operational PCMC–Swargate Metro line will now extend up to Katraj through a fully underground route. The corridor is planned beneath some of Pune’s busiest and densely populated areas, aiming to ease traffic congestion on major roads.
The proposed stations on the Swargate–Katraj route are:
• Market Yard
• Bibwewadi
• Padmavati
• Balajinagar
• Katraj
Authorities are planning to develop the Katraj station as a major transport hub, improving connectivity to the Pune-Mumbai Highway, Mumbai-Bengaluru Bypass, and nearby localities including Kondhwa.
Underground construction work has already started in Katraj. Due to the ongoing work, several PMPML bus stops have been temporarily shifted, while traffic diversions in nearby areas are causing congestion for commuters.
Meanwhile, Metro Line 2, which currently operates between Ramwadi and Vanaz, is being extended further to Chandani Chowk through an elevated corridor.
Construction of stations along this route is progressing steadily. Since the extension connects Chandani Chowk near the Mumbai-Bengaluru Bypass, commuters travelling from highway-side and suburban areas are expected to benefit from quicker access to the city.
According to Maha Metro’s proposed schedule:
• The Swargate–Katraj underground Metro corridor is expected to be completed by 2029.
• The Vanaz–Chandani Chowk elevated extension is targeted for completion by 2028.
