Pune, November 6, 2024: Pune city witnessed a rise in noise pollution during Diwali, with levels increasing by 3-4 decibels in many areas due to firecracker use, according to the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). Noise monitoring was conducted across several major locations, including Shivajinagar, Karve Road, and Laxmi Road, both a week before Diwali and on the festival day.

On November 1, Diwali day, certain areas saw a significant spike. For instance, in Shantinagar, Pimpri, daytime noise rose from 73.1 dB (October 24) to 81.0 dB, while at Laxmi Road, it climbed from 77.4 dB to 83.2 dB.

Most monitored areas exceeded the MPCB’s permissible limits for residential (55 dB) and commercial (65 dB) zones, highlighting rising concerns over noise pollution during festivals. The MPCB stressed the need for better controls to protect public health in residential zones.
