Does Jaggery with Warm Water Really Support Lung Health? Gurugram Pulmonologist Shares His View Amid Rising Pollution
With the air quality dipping and pollution levels reaching alarming heights, many people are turning to simple, traditional home remedies to keep their lungs healthy. While using air purifiers and masks remains essential, natural habits that support the body’s defenses are also becoming popular. Among these, drinking jaggery mixed with warm water is one remedy often said to “clean the lungs.” But does it really work that way?
According to Dr. Piyush Goel, Senior Consultant – Pulmonology at Narayana Hospital, Gurugram, jaggery does offer certain health benefits, but it’s important to understand them clearly. Many people believe that jaggery can physically cleanse the lungs or remove pollutants, but that isn’t entirely accurate.
What Makes Jaggery Beneficial?
Dr. Goel explained that jaggery is a powerhouse of nutrients, containing iron, selenium, magnesium, and vitamin B1. These essential nutrients play a vital role in strengthening the immune system. “When your immunity is strong, your body can fight infections more effectively, which indirectly helps protect your lungs and respiratory system,” he said.
So while jaggery doesn’t literally “clean” the lungs, it helps improve your body’s overall ability to resist respiratory infections. In this way, it supports lung health rather than directly detoxifying them.

How to Prepare and Consume It
The pulmonologist also shared an easy way to include this remedy in your daily routine. Mix 1–2 teaspoons of jaggery in a glass of warm water and drink it in the morning on an empty stomach. This helps your body absorb its nutrients better and may give you a natural immunity boost to start your day.
While such natural remedies can be supportive, Dr. Goel stressed that they should never replace professional medical treatment. “Jaggery with warm water can help improve your body’s resistance, but it’s not a cure or a substitute for medical care,” he advised.
He further emphasized that maintaining good lung health requires a combination of healthy lifestyle habits—eating nutritious food, drinking enough water, avoiding smoking, and limiting exposure to pollutants. Depending solely on one home remedy will not provide complete protection.
