In a significant move aimed at facilitating the democratic participation of elderly citizens, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has introduced a pioneering provision enabling voters above 85 years in Maharashtra to cast their votes from the comfort of their homes.

This pan-India initiative, catering to around 13 lakh eligible voters in the state, offers an alternative to visiting polling booths for those who may find it challenging to do so. District election officials have been instructed to identify such voters and deploy booth-level officers (BLOs) to offer them the option, distributing Form 12 D five to six days before the polling date.

Once chosen, the option to vote from home precludes the possibility of voting at polling booths. With Pune district leading with 1.24 lakh eligible voters above 85 years, followed by Mumbai suburban with 98,085, the initiative promises to significantly enhance inclusivity in the electoral process.

A dedicated team comprising BLOs and officials will oversee the distribution and collection of ballots from the homes of eligible voters, ensuring a seamless voting experience. Praised by citizens like an 87-year-old who voted in bypolls using this method, the initiative underscores the commitment of the government to ensure that every voice is heard, regardless of mobility constraints.

While the majority of citizens above 80 years prefer voting in person, this innovative provision offers a valuable alternative, reaffirming the principle of universal suffrage and inclusivity in the electoral process.
