Electricity Bills in Maharashtra May Drop by 10-30% from April
Maharashtra residents will see a significant reduction in their electricity bills starting April 1. The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) has announced a tariff cut of 10% to 30% for different consumer categories.
The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), which currently has the highest electricity rates in the state, will implement this reduction. MERC’s latest order found a revenue surplus of ₹44,480 crore, leading to lower tariffs for the next five years.
Why Are Electricity Prices Dropping?
MERC identified two key reasons for the rate cut:
- High Distribution Losses:Â MSEDCL failed to meet its target of reducing power losses, which remained at 22% instead of the expected 14%.
- Renewable Energy Savings:Â Future solar and renewable energy projects are expected to lower costs, allowing MERC to pass the benefits to consumers.
Who Benefits from the Tariff Reduction?
- Residential Consumers:Â Lower electricity bills starting April.
- Industries:Â High-tension (HT) and low-tension (LT) industries will see a 15% and 11% reduction in tariffs, respectively.
- Legal Offices: Law practitioners’ offices will now be charged under public service rates instead of commercial rates.
- Solar Panel Users: Residential consumers with rooftop solar panels are exempt from ‘Time of Day’ charges, encouraging green energy use.
What Experts Say
To prevent industries from relocating to other states, the average billing rate for industrial consumers will drop from ₹10.85 per unit to ₹9.20 per unit.
MSEDCL Managing Director Lokesh Chandra stated that electricity rates would continue to decline as Maharashtra increases its reliance on solar energy. This move will reduce overall power costs and ease the cross-subsidy burden on consumers.
