Environmental Issues in Pune Highlighted Through Cartoons At SPPU

Pune, February 7, 2025: In a unique event, environmental activists, renowned cartoonists, and students gathered to discuss pressing environmental issues and the role of cartoons in raising awareness. The Museum of Cartoon Art at Savitribai Phule Pune University organized an interactive session for students from the Environmental Science and Media and Communication Studies departments, in collaboration with Cartoonists Combine and Pune Samvad.

An exhibition featuring cartoons on the theme ‘Pune Tithe Kay Une’ was displayed, focusing on various environmental issues in Pune. Selected cartoons from a competition organized by Pune Samvad and Cartoonists Combine were showcased.

Eminent Cartoonist Suraj ‘Eskay’ Sriram was invited as the chief guest, introducing students to a new form of cartooning called â€˜Rhyme a Toon’, a creative combination of poetry and cartoons. Other speakers included Rekha Joshi from Pune Samvad, who spoke about their activities, and Vishwas Suryawanshi from Cartoonists Combine.

Ameet Singh, a member of Pune Samvad, discussed critical issues like climate change, deforestation, and pollution while emphasizing the role of art in communicating environmental concerns. Cartoonist Charuhas Pandit shared his insights on how cartoons simplify complex issues and evoke emotions, showcasing his famous â€˜Chintoo’ cartoons related to the environment.

Live caricature demonstrations were provided by Cartoonists Yogendra Bhagat and Atul Purandare, while Dr. Priya Gohad, curator of the Museum of Cartoon Art, coordinated the event. The session also saw participation from Professor Madhavi ReddyDr. Raymond DuraiswamiVivek HervadeCartoonist Sharayu Farkande, and students from both departments.

This event aimed to inspire action and highlight the importance of collaboration between environmental activistsartists, and media in raising awareness about the environment.
