Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis defended Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar on Thursday against calls for his transfer amidst scrutiny over the handling of the Porsche crash case. Speaking in the legislative council, Fadnavis acknowledged administrative lapses at Sassoon Hospital and pledged corrective measures.

Opposition leader Ambadas Danve raised concerns during a calling attention motion, urging the government to transfer Kumar due to perceived inaction in the Porsche accident involving a prominent builder’s minor son. Dismissing these demands, Fadnavis commended Kumar’s proactive approach in ensuring the arrest and custody of the accused.

“Amitesh Kumar handled the Porsche crash case very well. He acted proactively and personally ensured appropriate legal sections were applied,” stated Fadnavis, emphasizing Kumar’s role in invoking Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code related to culpable homicide.

Fadnavis acknowledged shortcomings in police actions leading to the accident and subsequent hospital treatment, promising disciplinary actions against responsible officers. He admitted to flaws in the administration and doctor appointments at Sassoon Hospital, assuring corrective actions through the medical education department.

Furthermore, Fadnavis announced plans to install CCTV cameras with artificial intelligence in Maharashtra’s pubs. Responding to concerns about privacy and misuse, he assured strict regulations on footage sharing, limiting access to government and security agencies only as necessary.

The legislative session highlights a robust defense of the police commissioner amid critiques of handling sensitive cases and highlighted government commitments to enhance hospital administration and surveillance measures across the state.
