Millions of motorists across India are set to benefit from a major reform in the FASTag system announced by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). From 1 February 2026, a crucial verification requirement will be relaxed, making FASTag usage smoother, faster, and far more convenient for everyday highway users.

What exactly is changing?

Under the revised policy, the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) verification process will no longer be mandatory for FASTags issued for cars, jeeps, and vans. Earlier, KYV was a compulsory step for FASTag activation and often caused delays due to technical or documentation issues. With this change, FASTag activation is expected to become quicker, while congestion and disputes at toll plazas are likely to reduce significantly.

Why was KYV becoming a challenge?

KYV was introduced to ensure that a FASTag was correctly linked to a specific vehicle and to prevent the use of duplicate or incorrect tags. However, many vehicle owners faced repeated problems such as:

• Server downtime

• Data mismatches

• Errors in uploaded documents

Because of these issues, FASTag activation was frequently delayed. Users often had to re-upload their Registration Certificate (RC), submit vehicle photographs, or undergo re-verification multiple times. This resulted in longer wait times at toll plazas and an increase in complaints to banks and customer care centers.

What solution has NHAI implemented?

To overcome these difficulties, NHAI has transferred the responsibility of vehicle verification entirely to banks. Under the new system:

• Banks issuing FASTags will verify vehicle details themselves

• Verification will be conducted through the VAHAN database

• If VAHAN data is unavailable, the vehicle’s RC will be used for confirmation

As a result, vehicle owners will no longer need to complete a separate KYV process after receiving their FASTag. Once activated, the tag can be used without repeated verification.

Key benefits of the new FASTag rule

The updated policy offers multiple advantages to vehicle owners:

• No delays in obtaining or activating a FASTag

• Immediate usability after issuance

• Reduced paperwork and fewer technical formalities

• Shorter waiting times at toll plazas

• Fewer disputes and smoother toll transactions

What about existing FASTag users?

Relief has also been extended to current FASTag holders. The mandatory KYV requirement for already issued FASTags will be largely discontinued. Additional verification will be required only in specific cases, such as:

• Complaints about a FASTag being linked to the wrong vehicle

• Suspected misuse of FASTag

• Incorrect installation of the tag

Why did NHAI decide to remove KYV?

Although KYV was introduced with the intention of preventing misuse, it gradually turned into a source of unnecessary delays and inconvenience due to technical limitations. Recognizing that the process was creating more problems than benefits, NHAI chose to eliminate this extra step and rely on bank-led verification using official vehicle databases.

What this means for everyday drivers

With these changes, the FASTag system is set to become more efficient, user-friendly, and reliable. Drivers can expect quicker access to FASTags, smoother toll crossings, and far less administrative hassle. Overall, the new rule represents a significant step toward improving highway travel and making digital toll payments truly seamless across the country.
