Fetching Extra Water? Pune Villagers Enforce ₹100 Fine Rule
Parsul village in Khed Tehsil, 71 km from Pune, is facing a severe water crisis. Villagers are struggling to fetch water from a deep well, one of only two wells in the village.
The drinking water well has almost dried up, forcing residents to impose strict rules. Anyone collecting more than two pots of water is fined ₹100.
According to the Free Press Journal, to prevent misuse, villagers monitor the well from 7 am to 10 pm daily. Despite the government’s ‘Jal Jeevan Mission,’ Parsul has not received proper water supply. Residents are forced to travel long distances in search of water.
The Gram Panchayat has started taking measures to prevent a drought-like situation. A villager said, “People agreed to the fine to avoid wastage. This will bring discipline and ensure water is used wisely. The water level in the well has already depleted.”
Villagers also struggle to provide water for their cattle. They must take them nearly a kilometre away every day.
The Gramsevak of Parsul Gram Panchayat, confirmed that the drinking water well has dried up. “The village has over 35 families, but most people live outside. The Gram Panchayat has surveyed the wells and is working on solutions to prevent further shortages,” he said.
With summer just beginning, the crisis is expected to worsen. Villagers hope authorities will step in with urgent measures to provide water.
