Filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi Sentenced to 2 Years in Jail in Cheque Bounce Case
On February 17, a court in Jamnagar, Gujarat, sentenced acclaimed filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi to two years in jail in a cheque bounce case. The complainant, Ashok Lal, a prominent industrialist and shipping magnate from Jamnagar, alleged that he received 10 cheques of ₹10 lakh each from Santoshi, totaling ₹1 crore, which subsequently bounced.
According to Lal’s advocate, Piyush Bhojani, Lal had contributed ₹1 crore to Santoshi’s film. However, when he deposited the 10 cheques in the bank within the stipulated time frame, they bounced. Lal attempted to contact Santoshi regarding the matter, but all efforts were in vain. Subsequently, Lal filed a lawsuit under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
This legal development is a setback for Santoshi, known for directing popular Bollywood films. The verdict underscores the importance of financial transparency and adherence to legal obligations in the realm of financial transactions, even in the entertainment industry.
