Fire Breaks Out in Daund-Pune Shuttle After Passenger Throws Cigarette in Lavatory Bin; One Detained
Pune, June 16, 2025 – A minor fire broke out in the lavatory of the moving Daund-Pune shuttle train on Monday morning after a passenger allegedly discarded a lit bidi (hand-rolled cigarette) into a dustbin, sparking panic among commuters.
The incident occurred around 8 AM near Yavat station in Pune district. According to an official from the Daund Railway Police Station, the fire was caused by paper and waste materials in the lavatory bin catching fire. Thick smoke emerged from the toilet area, alarming nearby passengers.
Railway authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported, and the blaze was quickly brought under control. The affected coach had only a few passengers at the time.
A 55-year-old man from Madhya Pradesh, believed to be mentally unstable, has been detained in connection with the incident and handed over to the police for further investigation.
As a result of the incident, the train was delayed by about 20 minutes at Yavat station. The Daund-Pune shuttle, a daily DEMU (Diesel Electric Multiple Unit) service, covers approximately 75 km and connects Daund town to Pune city, halting at seven stations along the route.
Railway officials are urging passengers to avoid carrying flammable items and to strictly refrain from smoking aboard trains.
