A viral Instagram review has sparked fresh conversation about train food in India, with many users defending the charm of a classic rail thali.

A foreign travel blogger visiting India has gone viral after sharing his unexpected experience of being served a full meal on an Indian Railways train journey.

Fran, who regularly posts travel videos online, documented the moment on Instagram with a caption that reflected his surprise. The text overlay on the clip read, “I did not expect this on an Indian train.”

In the video, Fran explained that he had not anticipated receiving a proper meal during the journey.

“I had no idea that they would actually serve a meal, so we might as well review what we get. Chapatis, chicken curry, dal, vegetables,” he said, showing the tray served onboard.

The meal also included rice, mixed pickle and curd, which he pointed out as he explored each item.

“And then there is rice. This looks really good. You actually get a mixed pickle as well, and curd,” he added.

He also opened a packet of sweets, which appeared to be halwa, admitting he was unsure about what it was.

“I don’t know what this is,” he said.

While tasting the curry with roti, Fran gave a positive reaction, saying, “It’s really good.”

In the caption of his post, he addressed the common criticism around train catering.

“I was genuinely not expecting this. Indian train food gets a bad reputation, but this mixed thali was actually good. Good portion. Fresh. Proper flavour,” he wrote.

The video quickly gained attention online, drawing comments from users who felt meals were a memorable part of train travel in India.

“This is India bruh, you will never sleep on an empty stomach,” one user commented, while another wrote, “Mate, that is the charm of food on a train in India, and it is usually really, really good.”

Some viewers also corrected Fran’s description of the dish, with one comment pointing out, “Bro that’s not chicken, that’s paneer. Cottage cheese. What you had was a veg thali meal which is pretty standard on Indian trains.”

The post has once again highlighted how everyday Indian travel experiences often surprise international visitors, especially when it comes to food served on long-distance journeys.
