e-Sanjeevani and Ayushman Bharat offer major relief for elderly citizens facing rising healthcare costs

For many elderly citizens in India, healthcare can be both physically exhausting and financially burdensome. However, two government initiatives are helping reduce this stress by offering free medical consultations and significant hospital coverage.

The government’s e-Sanjeevani platform allows people to consult doctors online at no cost, making it especially useful for seniors who may find it difficult to travel or visit crowded hospitals. Through this telemedicine service, patients can connect with qualified doctors via video calls and receive e-prescriptions for medicines.

The process is simple. Users can register on the official portal or app, verify their mobile number using an OTP, and fill in basic details. Once registered, they receive a patient ID and can book a consultation slot. The entire service, including consultation and prescription, is completely free.

In addition to routine care, the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) provides financial protection for serious medical needs. The scheme now includes citizens aged 70 and above, offering free hospital treatment of up to ₹5 lakh per year.

Under this scheme, eligible seniors can access cashless treatment at empanelled hospitals across the country. It covers surgeries, critical care, and treatment for chronic illnesses. Registration can be completed through the official beneficiary portal using Aadhaar verification.

Together, these schemes significantly reduce healthcare expenses. While e-Sanjeevani helps save on consultation fees and travel costs, Ayushman Bharat protects against high hospital bills that can otherwise strain savings.

Experts note that awareness remains a key challenge, as many seniors are still unaware of these benefits. Access to digital devices and internet connectivity is also necessary for using online consultation services effectively.

For families, helping elderly members register and use these platforms can make a meaningful difference. These initiatives aim to ensure that senior citizens receive timely medical care without financial hardship.
