From Bollywood Stardom to Corporate Boardroom: 'Ghar Se Nikalte Hi....', Song's Famous Actress 'Mayoori Kango’s Remarkable Story
The actress who won hearts with Papa Kehte Hain left films at her peak to script a new success story in the corporate world.
Remember Mayoori Kango? The light-eyed beauty became an overnight sensation after the songs of the 1996 Mahesh Bhatt film Papa Kehte Hain, especially Ghar Se Nikalte Hi, took the nation by storm. Although the movie was not a major box office hit, her performance as a spoiled brat in search of her father struck a chord with audiences, and she became a household name.
Unlike many who spend years chasing stardom, Mayoori’s career arc was different. Just when her popularity was rising, she took a decision that shocked the industry, she walked away from the glamour of films to carve out a career in the corporate sector.
Born into a family rooted in theatre, Mayoori’s entry into cinema was more coincidental than planned. During a visit to Mumbai to see her mother, she met filmmaker Saeed Akhtar Mirza, who offered her a role in the 1995 drama Naseem. Despite her hesitation because of board exams, she accepted, a choice that eventually led her to Mahesh Bhatt. Impressed by her talent, Bhatt cast her as the lead in Papa Kehte Hain.
While she went on to appear alongside stars like Ajay Devgn and Sanjay Dutt in Hogi Pyaar Ki Jeet and Jung, as well as in the Telugu film Vamsi opposite Mahesh Babu, Mayoori bid farewell to showbiz in the early 2000s. In 2003, she married NRI Aditya Dhillon, moved to the United States, and later welcomed a son in 2011.
Determined to reinvent herself, Mayoori pursued an MBA in Marketing and Finance from the City University of New York-Baruch College in 2007. That academic leap marked the start of her corporate career. She went on to hold leadership positions at Google India and later joined Publicis Groupe, where she steadily rose through the ranks. Today, she serves as the CEO of Publicis Groupe’s Global Delivery.
After years abroad, Mayoori eventually returned to India, settling in Gurgaon and balancing her professional commitments with motherhood. Industry peers and admirers alike have lauded her bold decision to move away from films and pursue an alternative career path, calling it an inspiring example of resilience and reinvention.
From a rising Bollywood star to a global corporate leader, Mayoori Kango’s journey proves that success can be scripted in more ways than one.
