In a remarkable story of success, Manish Anand has leveraged the Prime Minister’s “Vocal for Local” initiative to create significant employment opportunities in his native Bihar. His venture into makhana (fox nut) cultivation has not only transformed his own life but also energized the local economy.

Anand, who spent two decades working abroad, returned to India in 2012 with a vision to revitalize his ancestral village near Patna. He embarked on a mission to cultivate makhana, a crop that thrives in Bihar’s Mithila region. This area is globally renowned for its makhana production, accounting for about 80% of the world’s supply due to its abundant water resources—essential for growing makhana.

Before launching Mithila Naturals, the largest makhana factory in the country, Anand thoroughly explored the “Farm-to-Fork” model. His factory, which emphasizes sustainable practices, has provided numerous jobs, with women comprising a significant portion of the workforce. Anand’s innovative “Makhana’s Water to Platter” concept ensures that makhana is cultivated in water bodies, processed efficiently, and delivered to consumers as a nutritious food product.

Despite initial challenges, Anand’s persistence paid off as Mithila Naturals became a respected brand in the market. Anand highlights the increasing global demand for makhana, driven by its superfood status and health benefits. This high demand, coupled with relatively low production, has prompted both state and central governments to actively support makhana cultivation.

Makhana’s versatility is expanding beyond its traditional use in kheer to include snacks, shakes, savory items, and dry fruits. Its health benefits are well-recognized—being rich in protein, fiber, and antioxidants, makhana aids in weight management, improves digestion, and supports heart health. As awareness of its benefits grows, makhana is becoming a popular choice in modern diets.

Anand’s story is a testament to the power of local entrepreneurship and the potential of traditional crops to drive economic and social change.
