Dr. Garima Chauhan’s journey is one of extraordinary resilience and transformation. A dedicated anaesthesiologist, she moved to Uttarakhand in early 2023 with her husband, an orthopaedic surgeon, to start a new chapter in their lives. However, fate had other plans. Just a week into their relocation, a devastating car accident left her battling for survival, pushing her to the very edge of life and death. What followed was a harrowing medical ordeal, months of recovery, and an inspiring comeback that saw her conquer the Everest Base Camp, win a national beauty pageant, and embrace life with renewed vigor. From near-fatal injuries to extraordinary achievements, Dr. Garima’s story is a testament to human strength, determination, and the power of second chances.

On February 10, while returning from Jageshwar Dham, their car was hit by a speeding tourist vehicle at a blind spot. “It happened in a second. I didn’t understand anything,” Garima recalled. The impact was on her side, leaving her with severe injuries. While her husband sustained only minor bruises, she suffered a fractured right hand.

Locals rushed to help. Using a log of wood and cloth, her husband stabilized her hand. A government official arranged an ambulance, but getting medical care was a challenge. “Reaching a good hospital took eight hours,” she says.

During the journey, she was moved through three hospitals, none equipped for her critical condition. When she finally arrived at a fully equipped facility, she was already in bad shape. “I had severe internal bleeding in my abdomen,” she said. The next day, her condition worsened. Her pulse was weak, her blood pressure unrecordable. An emergency surgery revealed a ruptured intestine.

“I was in ICU for a month, on triple support,” she said. Her body had gone into septic shock due to multiple injuries, including liver damage. She was unable to eat or drink for 11 days. After stabilizing, she underwent a second surgery for her fractured hand. “Doctors told my husband to call my parents. They weren’t sure if I’d survive.” Her family rushed from Mumbai, praying for her recovery. “Their hope was me. I had no option but to be strong.”

After two and a half months in the hospital, Garima emerged not just as a survivor but as a warrior. “I became extremely grateful. Not everyone gets a second chance,” she said. Determined to prove her resilience, she set out to challenge herself like never before.

She trekked to Everest Base Camp, enduring harsh weather and pushing her physical limits for 14 days. “It was the toughest thing I’ve ever done. But every step reminded me that I am stronger than I ever imagined.” Standing at the base of the world’s highest peak, she felt victorious, not just over the mountain but over life itself.

Her journey didn’t stop there. She participated in and won the Mrs. India beauty pageant, proving that strength and beauty go hand in hand. She even skydived in New Zealand, embracing every thrilling moment. “I was never into fitness before, but now I work out daily,” she says, embracing her transformed self.

Now back to work as a full-time Anaesthesiologist, she lives life with new enthusiasm. “This is Garima 2.0,” she says. “Life gave me a second chance, and I am making the most of it.”
