Lancet Public Health Commission Calls for Global Regulatory Reforms as Digital Gambling Rises

A new study published in, Lancet Public Health, reveals that the health effects of gambling are graver than previously recognized, with nearly 80 million adults worldwide experiencing gambling disorders. The report, from the Lancet Public Health Commission on Gambling, highlights the urgent need for stronger global regulations to curb the risks associated with the rapidly expanding gambling industry, especially as it moves towards digital platforms.

The Commission’s recommendations advocate for strict regulations on gambling accessibility, marketing and sponsorship, while stressing affordable, universal support and treatment programs for individuals impacted by gambling-related harm. Despite a global call for action, the Australian government has delayed decisions on 31 recommendations from its Parliamentary inquiry, which include banning gambling ads and establishing a national regulator.

Professor Heather Wardle from the University of Glasgow warns that digital advancements make gambling far more accessible, with “a casino in every pocket,” amplifying the risk of gambling addiction. Additionally, the study warns of severe social consequences tied to gambling, such as family issues and elevated suicide risk, with adolescents particularly vulnerable to digital gambling mechanics embedded in video games.

The study critiques the gambling industry’s deep ties to digital marketing and fintech, enabling its rapid growth while often sidestepping regulations. Co-chair Dr. Kristiana Siste of Universitas Indonesia cautioned that early gambling exposure significantly heightens the risk of future addiction, urging international cooperation to combat the harmful reach of online gambling.
