Indore, known as the cleanest city in India, is taking a bold step towards becoming beggar-free. Beginning January 1, the district administration plans to implement a strict policy that will involve filing FIRs against anyone who gives money to beggars.
District collector Ashish Singh announced that an order prohibiting begging in Indore has already been established. He stated, “Our awareness campaign against begging will continue until the end of this month. If anyone is caught giving alms from January 1, they will also face an FIR.” He encouraged residents not to contribute to the issue by giving money to those in need.
This initiative to rid the streets of beggars is part of a central government pilot project aimed at rehabilitating beggars, which includes ten cities: Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Indore, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, and Ahmedabad.
During the anti-begging campaign, the Indore administration uncovered some shocking facts. Project officer Dinesh Mishra stated, “When we compile reports, we discover that some beggars own pucca houses, and in some cases, their children work in banks. We once found Rs 29,000 with a beggar. Another beggar was lending money and charging interest. One group even brought children from Rajasthan to beg here, and they were rescued from a hotel where they were staying.”
Madhya Pradesh Social Welfare Minister Narayan Singh Kushwaha mentioned that a local organization in Indore has stepped up to assist the government in these efforts. “The organization will provide shelter for six months and will attempt to find work for them. We are working diligently to help people break free from begging,” he said.
