Pune: From 2017 to 2021, engineers have emerged as the dominant group among successful candidates in the All-India Civil Services, which includes IAS, IPS, and IFS. They constitute a substantial 63.6 per cent of the list during this period.

In a remarkable development, these engineers have experienced a significant transition across various fields, opting for disciplines such as political science, international relations, and sociology for the examination. In a written response to BJP MP Sushil Kumar Modi in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, this information was disclosed by Union junior minister for personnel, Jitendra Singh.

The data indicates that the proportion of women in the civil service has shown a varying trend, fluctuating between 24 per cent and 28 per cent from 2017 to 2021.

During the specified period, 76% of the 4,371 candidates recommended for All India Civil Services came from the science stream, which includes engineering, sciences, and medicine. In contrast, only 23.6% were from the humanities stream, even though Minister Jitendra Singh noted humanities subjects as the most preferred optional subjects. It is worth mentioning that more than 650 successful candidates selected political science and international relations as their optional subjects, followed by 577 candidates choosing sociology and 514 candidates opting for geography.

It is worth noting that more than 76 per cent of the successful candidates in the civil service possess bachelor’s degrees, as per a related statistic.
