In a blog post explaining the artwork, Google said the doodle celebrates Mother’s Day with symbols representing care, protection and unconditional love.

Mother’s Day is observed on the second Sunday of May in countries including India, the United States, Canada and Australia. Over the years, the occasion has become one of the most widely celebrated days globally, dedicated to honouring mothers and maternal figures.

The history of Mother’s Day dates back centuries. Ancient Greeks and Romans celebrated spring festivals dedicated to mother goddesses such as Rhea and Cybele, often offering flowers and cakes during ceremonies.

Later, in medieval Europe, the Christian tradition of “Mothering Sunday” emerged during Lent. On this day, people returned to their “mother church” for special prayers and family gatherings. Domestic workers were often given leave to visit their families and mothers.

The modern version of Mother’s Day gained recognition in the early 20th century due to the efforts of American social activist Anna Jarvis. In 1908, she organised the first official Mother’s Day event to honour her mother, who had worked extensively in community service during the American Civil War.

The observance later became officially associated with the second Sunday of May, the same date linked to her mother’s memory.

Today, Mother’s Day extends beyond biological mothers. Many people also use the occasion to honour grandmothers, stepmothers, foster mothers, aunts and caregivers who have played an important role in their lives.

For some people, however, the day can also carry emotional memories connected to mothers who are no longer alive or relationships marked by distance and loss.
