Continuous rainfall in the Khadakwasla dam area led to a significant release of water into the Mutha river overnight on Sunday, resulting in the submersion of Bhide Bridge and Shivne Bridge by Monday morning.

Authorities initiated the discharge of water from Khadakwasla dam late Sunday night in response to heavy downpour in the dam’s catchment area. Settlements along the Mutha river were swiftly alerted about the rising water levels to ensure safety precautions were taken.

By Monday morning, the rising water flow submerged Bhide Bridge, compelling the police to close it to traffic. Temporary barriers were set up on both sides of the bridge, diverting motorists to alternate routes through Deccan Gymkhana and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Bridge for their commute.

Traffic police announced that Bhide Bridge will remain closed until the water recedes to safe levels, ensuring the safety of commuters. Regular updates will be provided regarding the reopening of the bridge.

The submersion of Bhide Bridge and Shivne Bridge highlights the impact of heavy rainfall on local infrastructure during the monsoon season. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and advise residents and commuters to stay informed about further developments.

Efforts are underway to manage the water discharge effectively from the Khadakwasla dam while ensuring minimal disruption to daily life. The incident underscores the need for preparedness and precautionary measures during periods of intense rainfall in Pune and surrounding areas.

Local authorities are coordinating with relevant departments to assess the situation and take necessary actions to mitigate further risks posed by the current weather conditions.
