Heavy Rains in Maharashtra: Supriya Sule Urges State Government to Allow Work From Home for IT Employees
Pune, July 7: Amid relentless rainfall disrupting normal life across Maharashtra, Baramati MP and NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) leader Supriya Sule has urged the state government to permit work-from-home (WFH) for IT employees in rain-affected areas.
In a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Sule highlighted the severe impact of continuous rainfall on daily commuting, particularly in Pune, Mumbai and surrounding regions. She requested the government to allow companies to implement remote working wherever feasible, especially for employees working in Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park, Hinjawadi, and other flood-affected locations.

Sule said the persistent downpour has caused widespread waterlogging, traffic congestion and long commuting delays, making travel difficult and unsafe for thousands of employees. She said allowing work from home would reduce pressure on roads while ensuring the safety and well-being of the workforce.
The appeal comes after the Forum for IT Employees (FITE) sought government intervention to direct IT companies to allow employees to work from home for at least two days. The organisation stated that several roads and underpasses remain submerged, making daily commuting unsafe, while many companies continue to require employees to report to offices despite the challenging weather conditions.
According to FITE, temporary work-from-home arrangements would not affect productivity and would help employees avoid unnecessary travel during the ongoing spell of heavy rain.

The Pimpri Chinchwad Cooperative Housing Society Federation (PCCHSF) has also backed the demand, urging the district administration to introduce work-from-home measures for IT employees during natural disasters to minimise risks and ensure public safety.
Apart from seeking remote work, Sule appealed to citizens to remain cautious during the monsoon. She advised people, especially those living near rivers and flood-prone areas, to avoid unnecessary travel, stay alert and follow all advisories issued by the local administration.
As heavy rainfall continues to affect several parts of Maharashtra, calls for flexible working arrangements are growing, with employee organisations and public representatives urging the government to prioritise public safety while ensuring uninterrupted business operations.
