Hinduja Group Chairman Gopichand P. Hinduja Passes Away at 85 in London
London (November 4, 2025): Gopichand P. Hinduja, Chairman of the Hinduja Group and one of Britain’s richest businessmen, passed away in London on Tuesday at the age of 85, according to a PTI report.
A key figure in the second generation of the Hinduja family, Gopichand—fondly known as “GP” in business circles—took over as Chairman after the death of his elder brother, Srichand Hinduja, in May 2023.
He is survived by his wife Sunita, sons Sanjay and Dheeraj, and daughter Rita. Earlier this year, The Sunday Times Rich List once again named the Hinduja family as the wealthiest in the United Kingdom.
Gopichand began his career in 1959 with the family business in Mumbai. Over the decades, he played a vital role in turning the Hinduja Group from a small Indo-Middle East trading company into a vast global conglomerate with interests across industries.
One of his most significant business moves was acquiring Gulf Oil in 1984, followed by the purchase of the struggling Ashok Leyland in 1987—marking the first major NRI investment in India. Under his leadership, Ashok Leyland grew into one of India’s most successful and respected companies.
As a visionary leader, Gopichand also led the Group’s expansion into power and infrastructure, helping set up major energy projects across India.
A graduate of Mumbai’s Jai Hind College (1959), he was awarded honorary doctorates in Law from the University of Westminster and in Economics from Richmond College, London.
Founded by his father Parmanand Deepchand Hinduja in 1919, the Hinduja Group now operates in over 100 countries with interests in banking, finance, automotive, energy, media, and healthcare. The company, which employs around 200,000 people globally, moved its headquarters from Iran to London in 1979.
Gopichand Hinduja’s passing marks the end of an era for one of the most influential business families in the world.
