What was first believed to be a tragic fire accident has now been confirmed as a cold-blooded murder, exposing a shocking act of violence and an attempt to erase proof of the crime.
What initially appeared to be a late-night fire accident in a Bengaluru apartment has now been confirmed as a brutal murder. A 34-year-old software engineer, Sharmila Kushalappa, was killed after resisting sexual advances, and her flat was deliberately set on fire to destroy evidence, police said after completing forensic and post-mortem investigations.
Sharmila, a native of Mangaluru, worked with a leading technology company and lived alone in a rented flat in Subramanya Layout, Ramamurthynagar. On the night of January 3, smoke was seen coming out of her apartment at around 10.30 pm. The building owner alerted the fire department, which broke open the locked door and doused the flames. Sharmila was found lying motionless near the kitchen and was rushed to hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.
At first, authorities believed she had died due to smoke inhalation caused by a short circuit. However, forensic findings and the post-mortem report contradicted this theory. Investigators found injuries on her hands and visible signs of a struggle inside the flat, raising serious doubts about the accidental fire claim. Medical experts later confirmed that she had been suffocated before the fire was set.
The police then narrowed their probe and detained an 18-year-old pre-university student who lived in the adjacent flat with his single mother. The accused, identified as Kurai and a native of Virajpet, was reportedly questioned after inconsistencies emerged during verification in the building. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to the crime.
According to investigators, the accused entered Sharmila’s flat at around 9 pm through a sliding window. He allegedly confronted her and demanded sexual favours. When she resisted and asked him to leave, he became enraged. Police said he pinned her down and covered her mouth and nose, causing her to lose consciousness. Medical opinion suggests she was smothered shortly before she lost consciousness, leading to her death.
During the assault, Sharmila sustained minor injuries, and bloodstains were later found around her mouth and nose, as well as on her clothes. To destroy evidence, the accused allegedly gathered her clothes and other items from the room, placed them on the bed, and set them on fire. The flames later spread to other parts of the flat, creating the impression of an accidental blaze.
Investigators also said the accused fled the scene through the same window and took Sharmila’s mobile phone with him in an attempt to eliminate possible digital evidence. The fire, police believe, was carefully planned to mask the murder and mislead authorities into treating the case as an accident.
The turning point in the investigation came after forensic and autopsy reports revealed that her injuries were inflicted before the fire and were inconsistent with accidental burns. The medical findings confirmed suffocation as the cause of death, exposing the deliberate nature of the crime.
Sharmila hailed from Dakshina Kannada and had been working in Bengaluru’s technology sector for several years. Colleagues and neighbours described her as independent and focused on her career. Her sudden and violent death has sent shockwaves through the city, once again highlighting concerns about women’s safety, even within their own homes.
The accused has been booked under multiple sections related to murder, sexual assault, destruction of evidence, and trespassing. Police are continuing investigations to verify all circumstances surrounding the incident and to ensure a watertight case.
The case serves as a grim reminder that crimes against women often occur in spaces assumed to be safe. It also underscores the importance of forensic science and careful investigation in uncovering the truth behind incidents that are initially disguised as accidents.
