The much awaited festival of the year is just a few days away. Each one of us is busy making it grand and brighter. But let us not forget the essence of our festivals is to maintain harmony amongst each other and nature too.

This festival of Lights is celebrated which marks the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya alongwith Goddess Sita and Rama’s brother Laxman.

In these three days of festival, people adorn their homes with beautiful sky lanterns, lit oil lamps, wear new clothes and exchange Diwali sweets and savouries, which are home made.

Let us understand how we can celebrate this in an eco friendly way :

1.      Lit your homes with oil lamps – Lit oil lamps and decorate the house with terracotta lamps.

2.      Stop bursting fire crackers which leaves harmful smoke : Burning of fire crackers leads to severe health hazards to people with weak immunity, asthma, breathing problems. This also leads to air pollution which causes harm to birds too.

3.      Use organic or homemade colours in Rangoli – Homes are adorned with beautiful rangoli designs during Diwali. Use homemade colors such as Kumum, Haldi, vegetable colors

4.      Carry your own shopping bags â€“ Diwali is one such festival when each one of us looks forward to buying new clothes. Ditch those plastic bags given by the shops and carry your own cloth bag from home.

5.      Use public transport â€“ Sit back and relax this joyful festival by opting for a public transport facility. Park your car at home and use the public transport system.
