The Government of India is set to roll out the upgraded PAN 2.0, which includes a QR code for easier verification. While existing PAN cards without a QR code remain valid, many people are opting for the upgraded ePAN with QR code. Here’s a detailed guide on how to apply for your ePAN with a QR code for free or at a minimal cost:

What is the QR Code on PAN?

The QR code on a PAN card makes it easier to authenticate the cardholder’s details, such as photo, signature, name, parent’s name, and date of birth. The Ministry of Finance has introduced this feature for better security and ease of verification. While not mandatory, applying for the upgraded ePAN with a QR code is a good option if you need it.

Steps to Apply for ePAN with QR Code:

Eligibility: Ensure that your PAN is linked with your Aadhaar number. If you haven’t linked your PAN with Aadhaar yet, do so to avoid any complications.

Check Your PAN Status: If you have an older PAN, you can apply for an ePAN with a QR code. If your PAN was issued recently (within the last month), you can download it for free.

Cost:

• If you have an older PAN, you will need to pay Rs 8.26 to get an ePAN with QR code.

• To get a physical PAN with QR code, the cost is Rs 50.

How to Apply:

• NSDL or UTIITSL: Visit the official websites of either NSDL or UTIITSL to apply. Depending on where your PAN was issued, the website will redirect you to the appropriate application process.

• Update Your Address: If you need to update your address, you can do so for free via Aadhaar-based address updating. This service is available on the Income Tax Department’s website, and your updated details will be reflected in your ePAN with a QR code.

• Receive Your ePAN: Once your application is processed, you’ll receive your ePAN in a PDF format at your registered email address. This PDF will be password protected for security.

Additional Information:

• Free Address Update: If your PAN address is outdated, you can update it at no cost using your Aadhaar-linked PAN details. This service helps ensure that your tax records are current and that you receive official communications.

• Physical PAN: You can opt to have a physical PAN card reprinted with a QR code for Rs 50, although the ePAN with QR code is sufficient for most purposes.

By following these steps, you can easily get an upgraded ePAN with a QR code, offering enhanced security and easier verification.
