Cases of fraud related to High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) are steadily increasing, with reports revealing that several gangs are manufacturing and installing duplicate HSRP plates on vehicles. This emerging scam poses a serious risk to vehicle owners and undermines the very purpose for which HSRP was made mandatory.

The government introduced High Security Number Plates to curb vehicle theft and ensure accurate tracking of every registered vehicle for security and law enforcement purposes. However, misuse of the system has now come to light, with fake HSRP plates being sold and installed illegally across various regions.

Taking serious note of the issue, Madhya Pradesh Transport Commissioner Vivek Sharma has directed all Regional Transport Officers (RTOs) in the state to initiate strict action against those involved in producing and fitting duplicate HSRP plates. Along with enforcement measures, the transport department has also issued detailed guidelines to help citizens identify genuine plates and avoid falling prey to fraud.

How to Install HSRP on Old Vehicles

For vehicles manufactured before April 1, 2019, it is mandatory for owners to proactively get HSRP installed. The entire process is online and designed to prevent misuse.

Online portal: Vehicle owners must visit the official SIAM-authorised portal and select a nearby authorised dealer as per their convenience.
Payment method: The fee must be paid strictly online. There is no provision for cash payment.
Appointment booking: After online payment, owners can choose a preferred date and time slot and visit the authorised dealer to get the plate installed.

Follow These 6 Rules to Avoid Fake HSRP Plates

The transport department has issued the following crucial guidelines for vehicle owners:

  1. Use only the official website: Book your HSRP only through transport.maharashtra.gov.in.
  2. Avoid cash transactions: HSRP payments are accepted only online. If anyone demands cash, remain alert.
  3. Mandatory verification: Before installation, the dealer must verify your vehicle’s chassis number and original documents to ensure the plate is issued for the same vehicle.
  4. Match the laser code: After installation, download your RC from http://vahan.parivahan.gov.in and verify whether the laser code on the RC matches the laser code embossed on the number plate.
  5. Check RC entry: If the laser code is missing on the RC or does not match the plate, it may indicate a technical issue or possible fraud.
  6. File a complaint immediately: In case of any discrepancy or difficulty, lodge a complaint without delay on https://transport.mp.gov.in.

Important Advisory for Vehicle Owners

Many vehicle owners, due to lack of time, opt for “look-alike” plates made by local mechanics or roadside vendors. However, only number plates installed by authorised dealers and officially recorded on the RC are considered valid High Security Registration Plates. Using a fake plate can make your vehicle appear suspicious in police records and may lead to legal trouble.

HSRP is meant to enhance your vehicle’s safety and ensure compliance with the law. Do not compromise your security by choosing cheaper or faster illegal alternatives. Always use official government portals and verify the laser code to ensure your number plate is genuine.
